Fred Stobaugh of Peoria, IL was mourning the death of his wife of 73 years when he heard an ad on the radio for a singer-songwriter contest at Green Shoes Studies. Jacob Colgan said he received countless record tapes and video submissions via YouTube, but there was only one large manila envelope entry that stood out in his mind.
In a beautiful letter, Stobaugh submitted his lyrics to, “Oh Sweet Lorraine”. Colgan said he”was so touched by the song and without even meeting Fred we thought, we’re going to do something.” Colgan decided he had to bring Lorraine back to life through her husband’s beautiful song, so he put it to music and recorded the song. In this video, Stobaugh heard “Oh Sweet Lorraine” for the very first time.
“Wonderful,” Stobaugh says after listening, while holding back tears. “Just wonderful.” The 96-year-old’s emotional reaction to his song, which has lyrics like “The memories always linger on. / Oh, sweet Lorraine, no I don’t want to move on,” will touch your soul and make you feel grateful for the loved ones in your life.
