As historic wildfires devastate the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, hundreds of people have been forced to flee and abandon their homes for their own safety, leaving everything behind.
New, heartbreaking footage of the sheer amount of destruction in the 15,000-acre area has emerged. The footage and photos show people only narrowly escaping the flames, only leaving at the very last minute. Other videos show just a few of the 700 buildings that have been totally destroyed by the disaster. These are the pictures of what many are calling an ‘apocalyptic’ scene.
Even popular parks and attractions like Ripley’s Aquarium and the Dollywood theme park have been forced to shut their doors and be evacuated.
Country superstar Dolly Parton is one of the many people heartbroken about the dire situation. As she grew up and is a native to the region, she is particularly saddened by her people’s woes.
In an effort to help them, she has generously pledged $1,000 per month per family who has lost their home in the wildfires, until they get back on their feet. She’s urging her fans to help her cause and donate to the “My People Fund” for the residents of Sevier County.
Parton stated in her announcement, “We want to provide a hand up to those families who have lost everything in the fires. I know it has been a trying time for my people and this assistance will help get them back on their feet.”
