There’s a new brand of organized crime that could affect you without you ever realizing it. Recently, 50 crime rings have been identified by Procter & Gamble. These illegal factories buy and sell counterfeit laundry detergents. You may have seen these advertisements on social media: cheap buckets of Tide, Downy, and Gain detergents. The only trouble is, P&G doesn’t manufacture large buckets for consumers.
The counterfeiters buy the fake detergent at about $5 a bucket, then sell it for as much as five times the price. So what’s the big deal? It’s still detergent, right? It even looks and smells the same as the real thing! While the product is intended for the same purpose, P&G scientists tested the effectiveness of the detergents. They’re far more watered-down, and they wouldn’t work much better than if you’d wash your clothing with water. Moreover, it’s unclear where these chemicals even come from.
“These guys are driving around with van loads of this stuff every day like it’s nothing,” Lt. Geoffrey Deedrick told ABC. “If you made just as much money selling counterfeit Tide as heroin, what would you choose? The Tide.”
The next time you see a five-gallon bucket of these products, you’ll know it’s not the real deal.
