In celebration of their sixth wedding anniversary, Makenzie and Steven Schultz went out for a sushi dinner in Cedar Rapids, Ohio. But apparently the restaurant didn’t get the memo about the couple’s special night. Twenty minutes went by before a waiter brought them water. They waited another 40 minutes before they got an appetizer.
In a scenario like this, you might figure that Makenzie and Steven would speak with the manager or leave a tip that was indicative of the poor service. But the Ohio couple did neither of those things, rather they tipped their waiter well above what’s considered the average. They left a note on the bill to go with it.
In a Facebook post, Makenzie explained her reasoning behind the hefty tip. “It was very obvious that the issue was being short staffed, not the server,” she wrote. “He was running around like crazy and never acted annoyed with the table.” That’s why she and her husband elected to give the server a whopping $100 tip — on a $66 bill.
“We’ve both been in your shoes. Paying it forward,” the note on the 2014 receipt read.
The Schultzes’ generosity did not go unnoticed. A number of news outlets picked up the story and applauded the couple for what they did. You can see a brief news clip below.
