George and Amal married in 2014, and it’s clear that the two adore one another. In an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show” on Oct. 21, 2022, George shared some insights into their relationship, including how they met — at a party that he hosted at his house in Como, Italy — and the fact they still write hand-written letters to one another. He also revealed their adorable proposal story. He proposed during dinner and had planned for Amal to reach into a drawer behind her — where he had hidden the ring — by pretending to ask her to get a lighter in there.
“‘I think there’s a lighter in that little box behind you,’” he recounted himself as saying. “And she kinda pulls this thing out, this little drawer and there’s this diamond ring in there and she looks at it and she’s like, ‘There’s a ring in there,’” George told Drew Barrymore. He recalled he was on his knees as Amal decided whether to say yes. “I literally said, ‘Listen, I really would like to marry you, but I also am not young and I’ve been on my knee now and I could like, lose a hip, you know?’ And then she goes, ‘Oh, yes,’” George continued.
He also admitted he was “terrified” upon learning they were having twins a few years later.
“We went to that thing at 12 weeks where they go, there’s the kid. … And (the doctor) goes, ‘It’s a boy.’ Then he goes, ‘And a girl.’ And I was like, ‘What?’”
“It was such a disaster,” George added. “I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Now, it’s the greatest thing in the world. I was terrified then.” At Barrymore’s urging, he explained, “Well, I was 56 years old, and that just sounded terrifying to me.”

Now, George has embraced fatherhood and is enjoying every moment of it. He told the Hollywood Reporter not long after becoming a father:
“The first thing you think is, ‘I hope I don’t screw this up.’ I mean, look, we are all responsible for things in life, and Amal and I are responsible for each other in a way — we look out for one another and we care about one another. But you are really responsible for two kids. I want them to be happy. I want them to have a sense of humor. I want them to be interested in things. I want them to be compassionate about other people’s plights. Because that’s the thing, you know? You have to have some sort of empathy.”
However, George admitted there had been some missteps along the way.
“We taught them Italian,” he told CBS Mornings. “But we don’t speak Italian.” He added: “So we’ve armed them with a language they can harm us with. And we both don’t really know what they’re saying.”
In the same interview, George also revealed his son, Alexander, isn’t a fan of all of his previous acting gigs.
“Alexander’s favorite superhero is Batman,” George recounted, “and I say, ‘What’s your favorite superhero?’ and he goes ‘Batman.’ And I say, ‘You know, I was Batman.’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, but not anymore.’ If only he knew how true that was.”
As for the future, George told ET he shared the same hope all parents do for their children.
“Which is to pay attention to other people. In my family, the rules were always ‘Challenge people with power, defend people with less power.’ And if you can do that, you’ve had a good life.”

Speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, George said, “Every single day of my life, I just feel lucky.” While he and Amal were surprised when they welcomed twins, they embraced life as parents of two.
“We just sat there, staring at that piece of paper they give you, and I kept thinking there was a mistake,” George said. However, he adapted to fatherhood well. “But I’m a very good diaper guy, which I didn’t know I would be,” he said.
As his kids have grown, George has opened up more about the different stages of fatherhood. In September 2022, George and Amal spoke with Entertainment Tonight about how their 5-year-olds were growing and learning.
Amal joked that it was “an issue” that her 5-year-olds were able to speak languages that she and George didn’t understand, but it was clear that she was impressed by their impeccable learning abilities.
In December 2022, George was recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors. He received plenty of praise from his peers throughout the week leading up to the honor and spoke about what was being said about him with Extra. He and Amal also spoke about how excited – and potentially nervous – they were about sharing the news with their 5-year-old twins.
“Hopefully one day we can show our kids some of the things that have been said about him over the course of the weekend,” Amal said. However, George replied, “Not everything that’s been said about me.” Amal replied, “I mean we’ll edit as necessary.”
George was later asked if his kids think he’s the “coolest dad,” to which he replied, “Well they’re 5 so right now I’m golden.” He added, “We know it’s gonna change but right now I’m golden.”
