Gomer Pyle was a character that originated on “The Andy Griffith Show” and was later featured in an off-shoot show called “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” The video clip below features actor Jim Nabors, who played Gomer, performing the song “The Impossible Dream,” written by Mitch Leigh with lyrics by Joe Darion.

The track was originally made famous as part of the Broadway musical, “Man of La Mancha,” but many other renditions have been performed over the 50 years since the musical was released. A wide range of stars have tackled the difficult tune, including Elvis, Cher, Roberta Flack, and Frank Sinatra, contributing to the song’s popularity.

In the clip below from “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” Gomer is experiencing a massive case of nerves before he is supposed to perform the song for a Navy Relief show. He says, “I got so scared, I lost my voice, and I can’t sing a note.” After a quick pep talk, Gomer finds his voice and gets up the nerve to deliver what ends up being a beautiful performance.
