In one of the most incredible music videos in the history of television, Johnny Cash and the Carter family joined together to sing a beautiful version of the old gospel tune “Were You There?”

In beautiful color, this video features the Carter family looking as beautiful as ever, while Johnny Cash seems a bit run-down. The 1960s weren’t very kind to Cash’s body.

Described as a troubled but very devout Christian, this contradictory man was constantly battling his own addictions and demons while trying to “walk the line” of what it meant to be a “good” Christian.

While he always fought against these struggles, he still kept up his faith and did his best. But at the end of the day, this man will always best be known for his passionate voice, and his “man in black” image.

This incredible performance by five amazing artists is truly a wonder to behold. This hymnal has been described as one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite songs of all time, and has since been recorded by countless musicians over the years.

Eight years after this incredible song, in 1968, Johnny Cash finally proposed to June Carter in the middle of a live performance in Canada. They had been playing together for years at that point and had finally found the loves of their lives; for better or for worse, they stuck through it all.
