The holidays are a joyful time… a time for presents, family and friends, and making lifelong memories. But sometimes, tragic strikes as the result of the holiday season’s most festive centerpiece: the Christmas tree. In fact, it’s been reported that between 2007-2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 230 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. These fires can cause deaths, injuries and millions of dollars of property damage.

Take precaution this holiday season. It’s crucial to remember to turn your Christmas lights off when you go to sleep, or when you are not at home. Keeping your tree watered, and checking the Christmas lights to make sure they’re in good condition are other helpful tips
