Five adorable sea otters live at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California: Abby, Gidget, Ivy, Kit, and Rosa. They were all rescued during their lives and were kept in captivity because they were unable to survive on their own in the wild.
According to Defenders of Wildlife, a sea otter’s diet consists of “urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, snails and about 40 other marine species.” They go on to say that “sea otters eat approximately 25% of their weight in food each day to support their high metabolism.” They also love ice. While I wasn’t able to find a specific reason for this, when I last visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium and saw the sea otters, the workers pointed out that the otters considered ice to be one of their favorite special snacks. They are given cubes of it as a treat during shows.
During the holidays, the Monterey Bay Aquarium decided to go all out with their frozen treats for the sea otters and shaped them, colored them, and even topped them with minced clams. They set up everything in a beautiful display and then let the otters into their enclosure, where they went at it. Check out the video to see what they do with their ice treats!
