Most people know the common saying that only two things are certain in life; death and taxes, however this may not always be the case when it comes to property tax.  It turns out that the U.S. government is willing to pay volunteers to live in a well-known ghost town.

The location is that of Garnet, Montana. To outsiders it may not seem to be home to the many reported ghostly shadows, but many familiar with the town and its history will tell you much differently.

The video below describes how the town first came into existence.

In 1895 Garnet, was initially named Mitchell and had 10 buildings within Granite County. The town was originally a rich gold mining area, and in 1898 housed around 1,000 inhabitants.

A fire broke out in 1912, and destroyed half the town; its people and its buildings. The town was most known for its saloons, at its peak the saloons were on of the hottest spots in Garnet.

After the fire destroyed nearly everything in its path, the town’s ruins were never rebuilt.

Its outward appearance may seem to be destroyed but venturing inside charred buildings, one can feel the rich history of wooden planked floors and antique furnishings.

Garnet is one of the most preserved U.S. destinations, only seeing around 16,000 visitors per year. The government wants to increase these numbers by paying volunteers to live among the ruins, including compensation for housing as well as all required food.

Those who believe they’d be able to endure the ghostly sights and sounds are encouraged to check out a Facebook page that has been setup for volunteers.
