It’s every parent’s worst nightmare to see their baby in distress or trouble, and elephant-parents are no exception. In 2012, the Amboseli Trust rescued a five-day-old calf from a big, muddy pond where there used to be a swamp. The mother, Zahava, along with the rest of the herd, were close by. So first, the rescue team had to scare the mother away so they could save her calf. But, like any distressed mom, she couldn’t stay away long and waited at the sidelines for her baby to be rescued.

Finally, the youngster is pulled from the pond and reunited with his worried mother. Some people believe that in the end, Mom is saying thank you to the people for helping. She keeps looking toward the humans and even turns back again, as if to express her gratitude. The duo are then seen walking side-by-side as they returned to the safety of the herd.

The Amboseli Trust for Elephants aims to ensure the long-term conservation and welfare of Africa’s elephants in the context of human needs and pressures through scientific research, training, community outreach, public awareness, and advocacy. Thank God for good people like this.
