Dressers are a bedroom staple. Most bedrooms have one. Yet what do you do with one once it breaks?
If you’re like me, you won’t bother fixing it and then sprucing it up like this one lovely lady did with just a little paint and a few new knobs. Instead, you’ll keep on using the splintering piece of furniture until you find the perfect replacement for it. But if you do that, what do you do with the old one once it’s ready to be replaced?
You could take it to a dump, sure, but by doing that you’re missing a golden opportunity to flip that dresser into something really innovative. For instance, one couple was sick of smelling their cats’ litter, so they turned their dresser into a feline haven where litter boxes fit snuggly into emptied-out drawers, and the other drawers contain the cats’ food. It was pretty genius.
This cool craft below was posted on The Owner Builder Network by Diary of a Crafty Lady. This blogger decided that, instead of converting her whole dresser into something new, she’d just take a drawer and make it into something pretty surprising. Personally, I’d love one of these in my living room. Best part? It’s really easy to do. All you need are the following materials:
- Old drawer
- MDF board
- Foam
- Fabric
- Nails/screws
- Old table legs
- Staple gun
- Hammer/drill
And to think, what most of us would consider garbage, she spun into gold…
It all started out with an old drawer from a dresser.
First, she had the hardware store cut an MDF board into two pieces the exact size of the top and bottom of the drawer.
Next, she cut a thick piece of foam the same size as the board and placed it on top.
She stretched the fabric around the board and foam and stapled it down to the other side. It’s the same process as upholstering a chair seat.
She added another square piece of fabric and folded the edges under to hide any raw edges.
Boards were then nailed on so that the top would stay in place.
She precisely measured the distance from the edge of the board to the opening of the drawer on all four sides.
Finally, she added table legs to make a really cute ottoman that you can store things inside or rest your feet upon!
