Reflecting on Legendary Actor Patrick Swayze’s Passing 12 Years Ago

It’s still astonishing to grasp that more than a decade has passed since the iconic actor Patrick Swayze left us. Even prior to his unforgettable roles in “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost,” Swayze’s legacy continues to endure in our hearts. Tragically, on September 14, 2009, the actor’s battle with pancreatic cancer came to an end. Throughout this challenging journey, his devoted wife of 34 years, Lisa Niemi, stood steadfastly by his side.

Their story began during their teenage years, leading to their marriage in 1975. This was a mere four years prior to Swayze’s cinematic debut in the roller disco film “Skatetown, USA.” Beyond his acting prowess, Niemi, a skilled dancer herself, even collaborated with Swayze on a dance film she directed, titled “One Last Dance,” in 2003.

Their relationship, marked by unwavering commitment, was not devoid of its share of challenges. These included Swayze’s ascent to stardom and his struggles with addiction over the years. Nevertheless, their bond endured.

A couple of years following Swayze’s passing, Niemi penned her memoir in 2011, aptly named “Worth Fighting For.” Within its pages, she eloquently shared their enduring love story, right up until the very end. The book delves into Niemi’s account of her husband’s final moments as he gradually slipped into a coma.

On a Monday morning, Niemi awoke to the sound of his faint breaths. There was an almost childlike vulnerability to the moment, and she recognized that his time had come. Later that same day, he peacefully passed away. Let us now delve into her poignant narrative.

Married since 1975 until Swayze’s passing in 2009, Niemi opened up to Entertainment Tonight about the heart-wrenching experience of witnessing her spouse of 34 years battle cancer:

“Enduring that ordeal is the most excruciating thing imaginable; you invest each day in a battle for their life. I’m aware he dedicated each day to fighting for his own…He defied the odds for 22 months, an astonishing feat given the prognosis he was confronted with.”

Niemi recounted that during his fight against pancreatic cancer, Swayze took on a role in the show “The Beast.” This endeavor brought about a remarkable transformation in him. Despite having spent considerable time confined to his bed, being in Chicago infused him with a remarkable surge of vitality.

“His tremendous surge of vigor caught me off guard. He reverted to his proactive self, ceaselessly engaged. I had Patrick back. Occasionally, he’d display glimmers of that ‘star’ demeanor, the traits that would occasionally drive me to frustration, like sudden, spur-of-the-moment demands and an air of unquestionable authority over… well, just about everything in existence,” Niemi recounted in her memoir.

She also revealed that Swayze remained steadfast in his determination not to let cancer dilute the demands of his work. Even when his character was supposed to perform a wall jump, he insisted on doing it himself instead of relying on a stuntman. Niemi emphasized that participating on the show’s set imparted a sense of strength and joy to Swayze, regardless of his diagnosis. Yet, just shy of two years after his initial diagnosis, Swayze succumbed to pancreatic cancer on September 14, 2009.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Niemi recounts the poignant moment she lost her beloved partner in her memoir. She reveals their final exchange: “My last words to Patrick? ‘I love you,’ and those were his last words to me. After I brought him home, things went very fast.”

Devastated by the loss, Niemi allowed herself time to mourn before translating her emotions into her book. This literary effort has effectively preserved Swayze’s legacy, ensuring his memory endures. Collaborating with fellow actors and friends of Swayze, Niemi participated in a documentary named “I Am Patrick Swayze,” which was released on August 18, 2019. This date coincided with both the actor’s birthday and the 10th anniversary of his passing.

Within the documentary, Niemi fondly reminisces about her moments with Buddy, her affectionate term for her late spouse. She describes the instant connection they shared when she took the stage years ago and gazed into his eyes—a true love story from its inception.

However, the documentary delves beyond his achievements, shedding light on Swayze’s struggles with alcohol abuse. Niemi candidly reveals that he would exude cheerfulness and vitality in public, but in solitude, he would succumb to crashes, straining their relationship. Despite the challenges that tested their marriage, Niemi’s affection for him remained steadfast.

More than a dozen years after his departure, fans of the charismatic star continue to hunger for insights into the enigmatic actor’s life. The stories disclosed by those closest to him depict him as a remarkably altruistic soul.
