New parents are always worried about their children’s health. They have much to be concerned over. From vaccines and flu shots and whether to breastfeed and not use powdered milk can be intimidating topics to bring up. They are yet necessary discussions parents must have with their child’s physician.
A worldwide recall has been issued by baby formula company, Lactalis. It is more widely known by other commercial brands such as Milumel, Picot, and Celie. Since early December, 26 infants have fallen ill with salmonella poisoning.
This isn’t normally a deadly illness. Those diagnosed usually suffer abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever. Babies have weaker immune systems though, which can make it particularly dangerous for them. They can suffer dehydration and require hospitalization.
The formula recalled comes in a powdered form. It has not been recalled in the United States. The countries on the list include Britain, Morocco, Greece, Sudan, Colombia, Peru, Pakistan, China, and Bangladesh.
The Daily Mail received a statement from the company spokesperson: “Michel Nalet told The Associated Press on Monday that the ‘precautionary’ recall affects ‘several million’ products made since mid-February.
“Lactalis said in a statement that the 26 cases of infection were linked to products branded Picot SL, Pepti Junior 1, Milumel Bio 1 and Picot Riz
.“It said it is ‘sincerely sorry for the concern generated by the situation and expresses its compassion and support to the families whose children fell ill.’”
As for the source of the contamination, the company believes it was at a tower used during the production process of drying the milk. The site is located in Western France. Procedures have begun to clean and disinfect the source.
