Still Going Strong
Michelle and Barack Obama celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary on Friday with heartfelt Instagram tributes.
“We’ve been on quite the journey over the last 33 years—and yet, I love you even more today than the day we said ‘I do,’” the former First Lady, 61, wrote alongside a photo of the couple smiling.
“Happy anniversary, @BarackObama! I’m so lucky to go through life with you,” she added.
Michelle Obama shared that she loves her husband even more now than she did on their wedding day.
The former president, 64, also marked the occasion on social media using the same photo.
“The best decision I ever made was marrying you, @MichelleObama,” he wrote. “For 33 years, I’ve admired your strength, grace, and determination — and the fact that you look so good doing it all. Happy anniversary!”
The couple first got together after Michelle was assigned as Barack’s mentor at a law firm.
Barack has called marrying Michelle “the best decision” he ever made.
She shared on an August episode of her podcast, IMO, that when Barack first joined the firm, she assumed he was “probably a little weird” and “nerdy.” Yet, she felt a “sparky feeling” when they first spoke on the phone, even before meeting in person.
Although they “really hit it off” over a long lunch, Michelle initially ruled out a romantic relationship, worried that as his advisor she might come across as “tacky” or “inappropriate.”
Clearly, that didn’t last: the couple married in 1992 and went on to welcome daughters Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24.
Earlier this year, the couple playfully pushed back against divorce rumors.
The speculation had intensified after Barack attended several political events alone, including former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Trump’s inauguration.
In January, a source claimed that Michelle was “checked out” of life in D.C.
She later addressed the rumors on an April episode of Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast, saying, “People […] couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself, that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”
The gossip even prompted Barack to joke about their relationship being “touch and go for a while” during Michelle’s IMO podcast.
