Joe Girardi was deeply moved by the heartbreaking news of Brett Gardner’s son, Miller, passing away at the age of 14.
Girardi, who managed Gardner for 10 seasons with the Yankees, has grown close to both Brett and his family over the years.
The tragic news was shared by YES Network’s Michael Kay during the Yankees’ Grapefruit League game against the Rays on Sunday, with Girardi and David Cone in the broadcast booth.
“You get to know their kids, and they get to know yours,” Girardi said. “It hits hard. I am just devastated for Brett and Jessica.”
Kay also noted how challenging it was to discuss baseball given the somber news.
In a statement through the Yankees, Brett and his wife Jessica shared that Miller had fallen ill, along with several other family members, while on vacation.

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st,” they said. “Miller was a cherished son and brother, and we can’t yet imagine our lives without his infectious smile. He had a passion for football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, and most of all, his family and friends. He lived life to the fullest every day.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has reached out with support and encouragement during this incredibly difficult time. We trust that our faith, family, and friends will help us cope with this unimaginable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Miller’s teammates, friends, and all families who have faced the heartbreaking loss of a child far too soon.
“Please respect our request for privacy as we mourn and seek healing.”
Former Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and his wife have announced the tragic death of their 14-year-old son, Miller.
Gardner spent his entire 14-year career with the Yankees, with his final season in 2021.
“Our hearts are heavy, and the entire Yankees family is filled with sorrow upon hearing of Miller Gardner’s passing,” the Yankees said in a statement. “Words seem inadequate in expressing the pain of such an unimaginable loss. It wasn’t just Brett who grew up in this organization for over 17 years — so did his wife, Jessica, and their two sons, Hunter and Miller.”
“We mourn alongside Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their close-knit community of family and friends as they grieve the loss of Miller, who had a bright spark in his eyes, an outgoing and spirited personality, and a kind and loving nature. Our love for the Gardner family is unwavering, and we will provide our constant support while respecting their need for privacy during this difficult time.
“May Miller rest in peace.”
