An engaged couple from Baton Rouge tragically lost their lives in separate car accidents just hours apart, leaving their 4-year-old son, Gabriel, without parents.
Alexus Lee, 25, and her fiancé, John “JR” Collins, 35, had recently purchased a home in preparation for their February 2026 wedding when both were involved in fatal crashes less than two hours apart early Friday morning.
According to Louisiana State Police, Lee was driving northbound on LA 67 near Lemon Road in Zachary when she lost control of her Toyota Highlander shortly after 2 a.m.
Her SUV collided with a culvert and overturned. The mother of one and STEAM Academy teacher in Clinton tragically died at the scene.
When authorities informed her fiancé, Collins, he headed toward the crash site. However, on the way, he lost control of his Chevrolet Camaro.
Police report that Collins was driving southbound on LA 67 near Idlewild Road around 3:45 a.m. when he failed to navigate a curve, veered off the left side of the road, and crashed into a tree. He also died at the scene.

Police reported that neither Lee nor Collins was wearing a seatbelt. Investigations into both accidents are still ongoing.

“I love them, and I’m going to miss them both, but I’ll find the strength to carry on,” Collins’ father, Arthur Collins, told WAFB.
Holding back tears, the families of Lee and Collins reflected on the couple’s lives and their love story that ended far too soon. Collins’ parents held hands as they spoke about the whirlwind romance.
“He loved Alexus just as much as everyone else who knew her. To know her was to love her,” said Collins’ mother, Sandra Collins.
“Losing Alexus feels different. It’s like a part of me is gone,” Alexus’s sister, Dominque Lee, said tearfully.
Now, their 4-year-old son is left without both parents.
“He understands what happened, but he’s struggling to grasp that we can’t talk to them or see them. He knows they’re asleep and with God,” Sandra added.

Lee, a recent graduate of Southern University, taught at East Feliciana STEAM Academy. Collins worked as a truck driver and had a passion for sports cars, WAFB reported.
Despite the devastating loss, their families say their love continues through their son, Gabriel.
“Even though they left a child behind, we have a strong support system. Both families will come together, and we’ll do whatever it takes to provide him with a good life,” said Collins’ father.
A joint celebration of life for the couple is planned for Wednesday.
