Homeless Man’s Heartfelt Plea to Save His Dog Moves Walmart Shoppers
For many experiencing homelessness, their pets are more than companions—they are family, and they’ll go to great lengths to protect them. This reality became clear outside a Walmart in Houston, Texas, when Wilma Frice spotted a man holding a sign that read: “Dog in pound, need help.”
The man, Patrick, wasn’t seeking food or money for himself. His urgent goal was to raise $120 to free his beloved dog, Franklin, from the pound.

Wilma shared the encounter with People, recalling, “He seemed like a kind, gentle soul who just happened to be going through a tough time. The look in his eyes was pure desperation—like a big kid who had just lost his puppy.”
Touched by his story, Wilma gave Patrick the money he needed. Shortly after, Franklin was released, and their reunion was overflowing with joy.
Patrick later expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt Facebook post:

“I’m honestly just so moved—Patrick is a wonderful man, and Franklin is an amazing dog. I helped because I would hope someone would do the same for me. I’ve spent my life caring for homeless animals and dedicated myself to their well-being. Any of us could find ourselves in his situation in the blink of an eye, and you never truly know what someone is going through. I don’t judge people by appearances… If you’re able, you should always try to pay it forward.”
Wilma’s kindness not only reunited Patrick with his beloved dog but also inspired countless others who heard their story. For Patrick, Franklin is more than a pet—he’s a lifeline, a source of unconditional love, and a reason to keep going through life’s toughest moments.
This story is a heartfelt reminder that compassion can truly change lives. Sometimes, the greatest gift isn’t for ourselves, but for those who matter most to us.
